Steven Claeys is an entrepreneur with a mission: he is determined to create comfortable and stylish clothing for people in a wheelchair.. Being a wheelchair user himself, Steven knows exactly how difficult it is to find adapted clothing that feels good, and looks good as well.
A flashback to 2014: travelling through Australia, 24-year-old Steven is temporarily working on a farm to earn some extra travelling budget. One day, he’s involved in a crash with an agricultural vehicle and the consequences are dramatic: Steven breaks his neck and is paralyzed from the chest down.
Several years later, Steven has picked up his life and he even managed to start his own business. “After my accident, I started looking at the world differently”, he says. “I discovered that there is a great need for adapted clothing that is comfortable, fashionable and safe.”
Steven saw this as a challenge and founded Sitwear. The fact that he is partly paralysed, doesn’t hold him back. “Being in a wheelchair, does not mean I can’t build a successful business”, he tells. “It just makes my daily life and my work a bit different. My morning usually starts with a medical treatment and an hour of kinesiotherapy that gets me ready for the rest of the day. After that, my personal assistant helps me to get dressed and have my breakfast. During the day I attend meetings, check my emails and plan the rest of my business agenda.”
Because of his physical condition, Steven has to undergo another treatment in the late afternoon. “After that second treatment, I continue to work for a few hours and do some administration”, he says. “At the end of a long day, I enjoy taking some time to relax, just like everybody else.”
A day in the life of Steven Clays may not be the same as the daily routine of any other entrepreneur. But every single day, Steven proves that a wheelchair shouldn’t be a hurdle on the road to business success.
