Want to be successful? Then be online

Growing a successful business takes guts, determination and a nose for entrepreneurship, but those are not the only essential parts of the perfect startup mix. To reach your potential customers, you need to be where they are: online. Even if you have a great offline marketing strategy, it just isn’t enough anymore. Online is where all the action is, so you need to be a part of it.

So, how do you put together the perfect online marketing strategy? Our partner FCR Media, an expert in digital marketing solutions, have poured their advice into these 5 great tips.

#1 It all starts with your website

More than 80% of Belgians turn to the internet when they need information about a product or service. So, it’s pretty clear what you need to do: create a website where people can find you, get in contact and eventually place an order. Your own website is an absolute necessity if you want to sell your product. Still, one third of small and medium-sized enterprises in Belgium don’t have their own webpage. Want to hear another statistic? Of all the Belgian companies that went out of business in 2016, 75% did not have a personal website.

#2 To make your website relevant, follow a few basic rules

Focus on an attractive and clear design.

Your website is often the first impression of your company that people get. An important rule is: don’t make it too hard for your visitors, keep things simple. That means avoiding long text pages, not adding an overload of pictures and video’s and staying away from complex navigation. Anything that can scare or bore your visitors, is out of the question.

Stay up-to-date.

What’s the use in having a website, when the content is old and irrelevant? Your website needs to be up-to-date at all times, so put some time in keeping it that way. Six out of ten websites today are updates only once a year or even less. If you want people to believe you’re a dynamic startup, your webpage needs to be alive as well.

Stay safe.

Be sure that your website had the SSL certificate. This will guarantee secure credit card transactions, data transfers and logins and it will result in better search engine results for your website. You can recognize an SSL site by the ‘https’ in your browser.

How does your site look on mobile?

Is your website mobile-proof? More than 50% of online searches is done on mobile devices, so it’s crucial that your website’s design will adjust to a smartphone or tablet screen. Search engines prefer mobile-proof websites, so make sure to check how yours looks on a small screen. One of the tools you can use is www.responsinator.com.
Your site’s need for speed

Mobile users want things to go fast. More than half of them tend to leave your site, if they have to wait more than 3 seconds for your page to load. You can check the speed of your site at https://testmysite.withgoogle.com.

#3 Attract as many people as possible

Having a website is a good start, but it won’t get you anywhere if people can’t find it. In order to be successful, you have to attract visitors. The best way to make sure that search engines will show your site, is to use SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Find out what keywords your potential customers are using in their online search, and implement those keywords in your web texts and photo tags. A great tool you can use, is Google’s Keyword Planner.

#4 Use your site as a sale channel

We still have a long way to go, but e-commerce in Belgium is currently booming. Online sales have grown massively in the past five years and the number of webshops has doubled. From a startup’s viewpoint, online sales have one big advantage: it’s a relatively cheap way to sell your product. There’s no sales team needed, only a good looking and easy-to-use webshop. Keep in mind that there are some important legal issues you have to handle, like Terms and Conditions of Use and a Privacy Policy.

#5 Create online consistency

Your own website is not the only place where people will find information about you on the internet. A lot of other websites will show your contact details too, so it’s obviously of great importance that those details are accurate. Google, Facebook, Yelp, Waze, Foursquare and many others will copy your contact details, opening hours and maybe even your introduction text. But you can’t expect them to keep that info up-to-date at all times, so keep an eye out yourself. You can do the test at: https://netsync.fcrmedia.be/partner/nl/diagnostic.html.
